Endothelin-1 (ET-1)

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is a member of the endothelin family which are the most potent vasoconstrictors known. Besides vasoconstriction, endothelins have effects on the central nervous system and on neuronal excitability. They induce the depolarization of spinal neurons, the release of vasopressin and oxytocin, and may be involved in the response of glial cells to tissue injuries. Elevated plasma concentrations of endothelins have been observed in hypertension, myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, Raynaud syndrome, and Crohn's disease.
