Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

Lutenizing Hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein containing two polypeptide units, alpha and beta. The alpha subunit is identical to that of FSH, TSH, and hCG. The beta subunit varies between the four and determines the biological function. The beta subunit of LH is 121 amino acids. LH is synthesized and secreted by gonadotropes in the anterior pituitary gland and is necessary for proper reproductive function. LH triggers ovulation in females and initiates the conversion of residual follicle into the corpus luteum producing progesterone and preparing endometrium for possible pregnancy. In males, LH stimulates the production of testosterone
