Krebs von den Lungen-6, Mucin1 Fibrosis (KL-6 Fibrosis)

Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) defines a specific epitope of the heavily glycosylated Mucin 1 protein encoded by the MUC1 gene. Mucin 1 is identical to the target molecule to which antibodies have been developed collectively known as CA 15-3. It is thought that KL-6 is specific to MUC1 expression by lung tissue as supported findings that KL-6 specifically recognizes Mucin 1 that is derived from type II pneumocytes following injury and subsequent regeneration. KL-6 is a potential prognostic epithelial damage biomarker for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
