A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 8 (ADAMTS8)
A disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin motifs 8 (ADAMTS8) is a member of the ADAMTS protein family, which contain propeptide region, a metalloproteinase domain, a disintegrin-like domain, and a thrombospondin type 1 motif. The ADAMTS family is structurally and functionally similar to matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and ADAMs. ADAMTS8 is expressed by chrondrocytes, neurons, astrocytes and macrophages, and likely participates in proteoglycan proteolysis. ADAMTS family members have been reported dysregulated in various cancers. ADAMTS8 is 1 of the 3 ADAMTS members with anti-angiogenic property, indicating its potential as a tumor suppressor. Downregulation of ADAMTS8 has been found in some tumor types and ADAMTS8 expression in may be predictors of survival in patients with breast carcinoma.
