Transferrin receptor protein 1 (TFR1)
The transferrin receptor protein 1 (TFR1) is a membrane glycoprotein whose function is to mediate cellular uptake of iron from transferrin. Measurements of serum transferrin receptor concentrations correlate with the total mass of immature erythroid cells. Serum transferrin receptor is used as a means of detecting erythropoietin (EPO) misuse by athletes and as a diagnostic test for anemia resulting from a number of conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, irritable bowel syndrome, lung cancer, and in HIV patients.
