Tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 13 (APRIL)

(A Proliferation-Inducing Ligand) aka TNFSF13 or CD256 is a member of the TNF superfamily. Expressed in haematopoietic cells, APRIL is initially synthsized as a 32kDa transmembrane protein which later intracellularlly cleaved into a soluable 17kDa protein. APRIL shares a high sequence homolgy with BAFF, another TNF family member, Signals through TACI and BCMA TNF receptors. May protect cells from apoptosis and increase rate of tumor growth. Elevated levels found in colon, thyroid and cancers of lymphoid tissue
