Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1)

Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and is one of seven members of the CEACAM subfamily. CEACAM1 is primarily expressed on neutrophils, activated NK cells, bile duct epithelium, colonic columnar epithelium and endothelium. It mediates cell-cell adhesion via homophilic bonding, or heterophilic bonding with CEA and CEACAM6. CEACAM1 helps in regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, and tumor growth. Expression is down-regulated in breast, colon, endometrium, prostate, and hepatocellular carcinomas and appears to be a novel serum biomarker for pancreatic cancer.
