B cell-activating factor (BAFF)

B cell-activating factor (BAFF) promotes the survival of B cells and is essential for B cell maturation. It is produced by macrophages, dendritic, cells, and T lymphocytes. Overexpression of BAFF in mice results in mature B-cell hyperplasia and symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). BAFF may contribute to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases by enhancing the survival of auto-reactive B cells.
