Transforming Growth Factor alpha (TGF-alpha)
Transforming Growth Factor alpha (TGF-alpha, TGF-a) was isolated from virally transformed fibroblasts. Exposure of normal fibroblasts to TGF-alpha elicits a reversible malignant phenotype. It belongs to the EGF family and has roles in proliferation and differentiation. It is also involved in angiogenesis, bone resorption, cell metabolism, cell migration, and wound healing. The mature, soluble form of TGF-alpha is a 50 aa section at the carboxy-terminal end of the extracellular domain. The rat and mouse homologs are 93% identical to the human protein.
