Vitamin K-Dependent Protein S (VKDPS)

Vitamin K-Dependent Protein S (VKDPS), also known as PROS1 or Vitamin K dependent glycoprotein, serves as an anticoagulant plasma protein and is a co-factor to activated protein C in the degradation of coagulation factors Va and VIIIa. It helps to prevent coagulation and stimulates fibrinolysis. It also binds to negatively charged phospholipids which are displayed by apoptotic cells. VKDPS therefore acts as a bridge between macrophages and apoptotic cells reducing the inflammatory effects of apoptosis. Deficiency of VKDP is a vascular thrombosis risk factor.
