Matrix Metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7)
Matrix Metalloproteinase-7 (MMP-7), also known as Matrilysin, activates procollagenase and degrades casein, gelatins of types I, III, IV, and V, and fibronectin. It is involved in wound healing and studies in mice suggest that it regulates the activity of defensins in intestinal mucosa. It is the smallest member of the MMP-family. MMP-7 is a zinc-dependent metalloproteinase that is overexpressed in many cancers, including colon cancer where it is thought to play an important role in the early steps of tumor progression. MMP-7 is a secreted matrix metalloproteinase that contributes to angiogenesis by breaking down basement membranes.
