Interleukin-13 (IL-13)
Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is expressed in activated T-helper cells and T-cells expressing CD8. It down-modulates macrophage activity, reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12) and chemokines (MIP-1, MCP) in response to IFN-gamma or bacterial lipopolysaccharides. IL-13 enhances the production of the IL-1 receptor antagonist. It also decreases the production of nitric oxide by activated macrophages, leading to a decrease in parasiticidal activity.
