Connective Tissue Growth Factor (CTGF)
CTGF (connective tissue growth factor) is a 349-amino acid cysteine-rich polypeptide belonging to the CCN family. In vitro studies have shown that CTGF is mainly involved in extracellular matrix synthesis and fibrosis. Upregulation of CTGF mRNA and an increase of CTGF protein levels has been observed in various diseases, including diabetic nephropathy and cardiomyopathy, fibrotic skin disorders, systemic sclerosis, biliary atresia, liver fibrosis and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and non-diabetic acute and progressive glomerular and tubulointerstitial lesions of the kidney. A recent cross-sectional study found that urinary CTGF may act as a progression promoter in diabetic nephropathy.
