Alpha-1-Antichymotrypsin (AACT)

Alpha 1-antichymotrypsin (AACT) is an acute phase protein produced in the liver and a deficiency of the protein has been associated with liver disease. Mutations in AACT have been identified in patients with Parkinson disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The serpin 1-antichymotrypsin is a major component of brain amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease. In vitro, AACT interacts with the Alzheimer's amyloid peptide A1-42 to stimulate both formation and disruption of neurotoxic A1-42 fibrils in a concentration-dependent manner. In the blood, AACT inhibits the activity of cathepsin G and chymases.
