Agouti-Related Protein (AgRP)

Agouti-related Protein (AgRP) is a neuropeptide produced in the brain and a potent appetite stimulator. It is inhibited by the hormone leptin and functions as an antagonist for melanocortin receptors. AgRP is expressed primarily in the adrenal gland, subthalamic nucleus and hypothalamus, but is also found in lower levels in the testes, lung and kidney. Defects in AGRP may be a cause of autosomal dominant obesity.
